BBC Turkish is a multi-platform department, providing news and information to Turkish speaking audiences in Turkey and around the world on Online, social media and TV seven days a week. It requires a number of Broadcast Journalists to work across the range of its output. Working under the supervision of Senior Broadcast Journalists, Broadcast Journalists produce accurate, informed and interesting news and programming to the highest possible standards. The role demands creativity and flexibility, as well as a genuine passion for explaining the world to our audiences. This position is offered on a 12 month attachment/fixed term contract basis and the salary will between £30,594 – £32,000pa.

You will research, write, translate, edit or adapt items, stories or programme material for the BBC Turkish Service. You will find contributors and interviewees as well as other sources of material whilst maintaining professional journalistic standards. Alongside this, you will undertake pre and post production and studio work, live and pre-recorded as well as perform on air, conduct interviews and chair discussions.

Requirements

You will be fluent in written and spoken Turkish and have a good level of English with the ability to work effectively in both languages. You will have significant and recent experience as a journalist, with good knowledge of production techniques. The ability to write, adapt and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media is required. As well as this, you will have strong team working and highly developed communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with a range of people.

Of course the situations of both opposition parties are different from one another in terms of both the problem they have been confronted by and the way to react against it. However, it’s undoubted that they are right in their attitudes towards the anti-democratic attacks against their members. What seems to be much more anti-democratic is that instead of resolving ones, provoking and heating steps have been made by the majority-party or the AKP. The deputies-chairman of the AKP have brought up every probable precaution that would prevent these opposition parties from continuing their democratic struggles.

One should never forget the fact that in this sense the attitudes of these opposition parties not to take the oath are already taking an oath, which is made for the sake of real democracy and “national-popular will” as opposed to the general belief associating the loyalty to the will of nation with a formal “oath”.

I never want that my support for the attitudes of opposition parties is taken to contain partisan biases or anarchic feelings by my readers especially my dear colleagues believing that this attitude could reduce the power of the opposition parties in the parliament. That’s why I preferred to explain my support. First of all one should accept that democratic societies are to recognize the “supremacy of law” which highlights that no public or private activity can be against legal provisions. So I, since I identify myself as a “real democrat”, am also not against any judicial investigation, as far as it’s in line with the universal human rights. However, here we see all the accused are the AKP-opponents who have been imprisoned by highly politicized judicial activities such as the insist on imprisoning despite the inexistence of evidences, inhuman duration of detention, usage of unreal and irrationally “made” evidences, etc.   So these lawless implementations are leading us to have no doubt that this is a politically prejudicial operation conducted by the AKP rather than a rightful judicial investigation conducted by independent judiciary. Simply in order to react this, some of the accused people were proposed as candidates and they were elected. So nobody can take their inalienable right of being popularly elected.
Another group of commentators and even some of the CHP-electorate claimed that the best way of struggling against this would be the parliamentary struggle. I think this is a simple parliamentary-conservative point of view. Why then? Because everyone knows that the parliamentary struggle provides a single way which I believe is definitely a vicious circle: initiating bills which have always been tried by the opposition parties and rejected by the ruling parties.

So I believe Turkey, if it demands more democracy, should react anti-democratic activities in non-conservative and a bit more radical ways, because democracy is the only thing ensuring people’s freedom. So in order to manage this reaction process, one should first gain consciousness enabling to see the realities. I think, the Republican People’s Party (the CHP) acted in line with this, which I hope will contribute future change in peoples mind [towards consciousness]. For this, the CHP ought to express its view to the people in the right way. In this process, the consistency is also of a great significance. If you took the oath of democracy, you should be consistent in your belief in democracy, even if no one tends to support you. “Do what you think is right, do it not for the sake of someone but for the sake of the right”

Student protesters carrying copies of Dr. Thornton's report calling for his reinstatement

On 4 May 2011, Dr Rod Thornton (QGM), a former soldier turned academic was suspended from his job as lecturer at the university of Nottingham’s School of Politics and International Relations.

The reason for Dr Thornton’s suspension was because his whistle-blowing research – ‘How a student’s use of a library book became a “major Islamist plot”’ – exposing the complicity of university management and some staff members in the wrongful arrest of a student and a member of staff – Rizwaan Sabir and Hicham Yezza – as suspected terrorists in May 2008. Dr Thornton’s report reveals how, subsequent to the wrongful arrests of the Nottingham Two, the university undertook a campaign to discredit and smear them and their supporters, as recorded in the internal documentation most of which was disclosed by the university itself under the Data Protection and the Freedom of Information acts.

Dr Thornton presented his research at the 2011 annual conference of the British International Studies Association (BISA) in Manchester. On the 2nd May, the article was removed from the BISA website after the University of Nottingham claimed the article was defamatory and the BISA believed it would to take them to court. An attack on academic freedom and freedom per se, the suspension of Dr. Thornton is a clear attempt to silence and censor a courageous voice that has raised critical questions.

The paper is extensively referenced and complies with the highest standards of integrity expected of an investigative research paper. Firstly, the burden of proof is on the university, and not, as the university has argued, on Dr Thornton. Secondly, the university must prove how Dr Thornton’s research misrepresents the facts and is defamatory.

Like Dr Thornton, we believe that his research is in line with the University of Nottingham’s own whistle-blowing code of conduct and that, responsibly, Dr Thornton only made the report public after exhausting all possible routes of internal complaint – a route that earned him nothing more than seven employment disciplinaries.

We believe that Dr Thornton’s research provides a compelling case, based on a comprehensive set of evidence, that raises serious questions and should be treated with due-seriousness and further investigation. It simply cannot be ignored.

This is not the time for the university to undertake a reactionary PR campaign, but accept that an assessment of the claims must be made.

We ask that you to read the paper yourself and draw your own conclusions. We are confident that after reading the research, you too will agree that the onus is now on the University of Nottingham to provide a defence for its actions – not on Dr. Thornton.

We call for a independent and statutory public enquiry on the initial arrests, their aftermath and the treatment of Dr Thornton in producing and publishing this report. We encourage others to do the same.

Our aims are:

1. That the University of Nottingham reinstates Dr. Thornton to his position as lecturer in the School of Politics and International Relations with immediate effect
2. That there is a full, independent and statutory public enquiry into the actions of the University of Nottingham regarding the arrests of the Nottingham Two in 2008, the revelations made in Dr Thornton’s research and the suspension of Dr Thornton after his report had been published, and
3. That the University of Nottingham fully cooperates with the statutory public enquiry.

Transport secretary Philip Hammond says that, as the plume of ash is decreasing, there will be delays but not cancellations

The volcanic ash plume causing havoc in airspace over western Europe is unlikely to disturb the plans of holidaymakers hoping to fly away for the bank holiday, according to the transport secretary, Philip Hammond.

He said that no airports will be closed and no planes grounded as the plume steadily decreases in height and intensity. Any disturbance due to the eruption will be limited to mild delays.

Hammond rejected claims by Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary that the weather charts showing ash over Scotland were “mythical”.

Speaking to the press after chairing the government’s Cobra crisis response committee, Hammond said O’Leary had been wrong to claim he had flown safely through airspace condemned as dangerous by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

“O’Leary’s claims that the charts are wrong and that it is safe to fly are confusing and irresponsible,” said Hammond. “Despite his assertions that he had flown through a red zone … it appears from flight logs that he was travelling at a height and time that the CAA had already redesignated as being safe.”

Hammond admitted the weather charts were not as precise as he would like. But, he said: “The charts are much more refined than they were last year. Could they be more refined? Of course, but we are in a continuously learning process. Our primary responsibility must always be the safety of passengers.

Hammond said he was “cautiously optimistic” that south-west winds will clear the remaining ash from British air space over the next couple of days. “In the short term, it is reasonably positive news,” he said.

The blanket bans imposed by the government last time there was a volcanic eruption were, added Hammond, a thing of the past.

The new system, requested by the airlines after the chaos of last year, allows individual carriers to apply for permission to fly in different environments depending on their specific capabilities.

Hammond said this meant proportionally fewer flights had been cancelled and airports closed this time around. “We’re red-lining a much smaller proportion of total ash cloud this year compared to last,” he said.

British Airways, easyJet and BMI cancelled substantial numbers of Scotland services, and transatlantic flights also suffered delays of up to an hour on Tuesday morning. Airports in Newcastle and Durham Tees suffered cancellations as the ash cloud drifted southwards.

A Met Office spokesman said the thickest concentrations of ash, which airlines still cannot fly through, will have moved across the north sea by 6am on Wednesday, allowing airlines to resume normal services. “High concentrations of ash will be moving towards Germany, Holland and Denmark.” Eurocontrol warned of “some impact” on flights in Scandinavia, but said new safety procedures for flying through ash would limit cancellations. According to more distant forecasts, if the Grímsvötn eruption continues there is a risk of further disruption across much of the UK on Friday.

The spokesman said windy and wet weather was helping to disperse the particles, unlike last April when the UK was caught in a dead calm of high pressure that prevented dispersal of a cloud from Iceland‘s Eyjafjallajökull volcano.

Ultimately, airlines were only able to fly again following a radical redrafting of safety guidelines for flying through ash.

“The weather is much more dynamic,” said the Met Office spokesman. “There is a succession of high and low pressure areas [creating wind] coming across the Atlantic and there is a lot of rain that tends to wash out the pollutants.”

The intensity of the eruption is also diminishing. The height of the column of ash coming out of the volcano, which is sensitive to the rate of material coming out, had reduced from 20km on Sunday to around 5km on Tuesday.

In addition, the land around the volcano no longer seems to be inflated with magma from the Earth’s interior and seismometers have detected a decline in the tremors that are normally associated with an eruption.

Colin Brown, director of engineering at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, who has previously worked on aircraft engines at Rolls Royce, said the Grímsvötn eruption would “absolutely not” be as impactful on the UK as last year’s volcanic disruption. “The two fundamental differences are that it’s a different volcano and, thankfully, the weather is completely different,” he said.

The Barcelona football team said it would travel to London on Wednesday night for Saturday’s Champions League final against Manchester United, in case the ash cloud left the team contemplating an epic rail journey.

The Met Office rejected claims from Ryanair that it had put out “mythical” weather charts that erroneously placed dense ash clouds over Scotland throughout much of Tuesday, citing evidence of ash falls in Glasgow, Kirkwall Airport and citings by airplanes and a research ship travelling between Iceland and Scotland.

“We have seen lots of evidence from various sources that the ash is present across Scotland and fits in with the computer models that we are running continually. It all points to a presence where we expect to see it.”

Ryanair claimed that dense ash clouds were non-existent after running a test flight yesterday morning between Glasgow, Inverness and Edinburgh which it said produced no evidence of ash in the Boeing airplane’s engines or on its fuselage.

However, Europe’s largest short-haul airline has effectively been barred from Scottish airspace after failing to get safety clearance from the Irish Aviation Authority.

Under the new safety regime on ash, airlines must prove that they can fly through three types of volcanic pollution: low; medium; and high. Major UK airlines have been cleared by the Civil Aviation Authority to fly in medium or low densities, which have also hit the UK .

Ryanair, which is registered in Dublin, saw its initial submission to the IAA rejected on Monday evening for unspecified reasons. The IAA has said that it is still considering Ryanair’s new submission, forcing the airline to avoid airspace with even medium densities of ash, defined as 4000 microgrammes per cubic metre of air.

The IAA said it was “currently working with Ryanair on its safety case submission and it is inappropriate to make any comment on this case.”

Ryanair said: “Following a direction from the Irish Aviation Authority Ryanair regrets that we have been forced to cancel all flights to/from Scottish Airports for the remainder of the day.”

Aviation sources also pointed to the test flight’s operational height of 41,000 feet, which was higher than the densest ash concentrations over Scotland.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), whose members include BA and bmi, accused UK authorities of a slow response and accused the CAA of failing to procure a back-up atmospheric monitoring plane, a claim which the CAA rejected.

Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s chief executive, added that non-European airlines could be confused by the ash cloud because their regulators will not be fully aware of the latest EU guidelines on flying through volcanic plumes.

“We need a clear, consistent and appropriate response, which is workable for all airlines globally, not a repeat of the fragmented mess that happened last year.”

HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION OF IRAQI TURKMEN 08.11.2010

A leading lawmaker in Flanders deliberately insults Turks and Turkey during a live TV program with unsolicited racist remarks.

President of the Flemish parliament in Belgium, Jan Peter Peumans  (59,)  causes a scandal with his arrogant and bigoted comments during a quiz show, ”De Pappenheimers,”  by VRT (Flemish Public Radio and Television Broadcasting Federated) on Wednesday, December 1, 2010.   (watch video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQFqcaqiJi0 )

The question the organizers of the quiz show haplessly considered amusing and proper for a competition watched by general public, including children, was a related to  a comment by the famous French philosopher:  “Who did Voltaire think was the most disgusting nation?”  The potential answers offered were Flemish, Jews and Turks.  Peumans replied: “ Turks.”

After a loud laughter, he was reminded that the correct answer was “the Jews”.  Peumans said he knew the right answer but was scared to say it because of possibly very strong Jewish reaction.  Laughter in the audience grew.  When asked “Wouldn’t the Turks do react equally strongly?”  Peumans replied with a negative.

Film director Jan Eelen, another contestant, told Peumans later that the Turkish Embassy had been informed of the incident by Güler Turan — a Flemish parliament member of Turkish heritage.  Turkish Ambassador Murat Ersavcı  called Peumans to convey Turkey’s disappointment by the racist question and comment.  The remarks also drew strong reactions from Turks  in and out of Belgium.

All of this unfortunate episode took only a few minutes.  But its reverberations promise to take more than that… much more!

First, it is, indeed, a sad day in Belgium if a major entertainment industry executive there thinks racist questions are fun for the entire family.  A sensitization course in Belgium on issues of diversity and tolerance seems appropriate and even urgent.

Second, it must be especially ironic for such a bigoted question to surface in a country which suffered terribly under the racist persecution the Nazis (perhaps Peumans is too young to remember or too ignorant to know.)  Such a question should never have been asked in the first place.  How would the audience who cheered on the racist questions and response if the next question in the live quiz show was about the feelings of the German Nazis about Belgians and if the potential answers offered were  A) cowards     B)cheap skates    C) both?   Would they consider that to be “family fun?”

Third, if a Belgian politician publicly declares that he deliberately provides false answers for political correctness or expediency, and cheered on by millions in and around Belgium, and arguably around Europe, what does that tell one about the state of affairs and mind in Europe?  Are prejudice, humiliation, intimidation, discrimination, and racism accepted norms of thought and/or conduct in Belgium and/or Europe?

Fourth, Voltaire was a crusader against tyranny and bigotry, which is probably why he could not keep out of trouble.  Almost every person of importance was Voltaire’s enemy at some period of his life.  Voltaire, the Renaissance man of the Enlightenment, was no pussycat , either, as he struck back with bitter, mocking, poignant sarcasm whenever he was attacked.

Voltaire often scrutinized the political and philosophical controversies of the 18th century and campaigned tirelessly on behalf of the oppressed.

You, Mr. Peumans, badly need to learn the tragic plight of Jean Calas, a Protestant in Toulouse, which illustrates the passion in Voltaire.  Calas had a son who wanted to study law but he was denied access because he was not a Catholic. The son got very depressed and killed himself, a fatal sin then. His family decided to conceal the suicide as they did not want to see his body dragged in the streets and fed to dogs as was the common practice for those who took their own lives.  A rumor started that Jean Calas had murdered his son because he wanted to convert to Catholicism. The old man was convicted of murder on the basis of the flimsiest hearsay evidence by lynch mobs. Rejecting confession even after terrible torture, Calas was tied to a wooden cross, had his arms and legs broken.  Then he was strangled  by the executioner and burned at the stake. The state confiscated his property, leaving his widow homeless, penniless, and childless,  as the latter were forced into Catholic institutions.

Voltaire heard about this and set out to clear Calas. He wrote many letters to powerful people throughout Europe, hired a lawyer, and raised money for the family. eventually securing a unanimous vote in the parliament of Paris declaring Calas innocent.  Calas himself was dead but the reversal of his conviction meant that his estate was returned to his family and the children returned to their mother.   That was Voltaire!

I told you this story for two reasons:

1)  You and your supporters are doing to Turks today what the Catholic Church did to Protestant merchant Jean Calas of Toulouse in 1762.

2)  If Voltaire was alive today, he would fight you and your kind for the same reasons he fought for Jean Calas of Toulouse

Last but not least, here is what Voltaire really said about the Turks:

“ The great Turk is governing in peace twenty nations from different religions. Turks have taught the Christians how to be moderate in peace and gentle in victory.”

It is never too late to learn new facts and proper manners.

Yarışmada ünlü Fransız düşünür Voltaire’in, “Dünya yüzündeki en iğrenç halk” olarak hangi milleti tanımladığı sorusunda bildiğini itiraf ettiği doğru
şık “Yahudiler” yerine “Türkler” şıkkını tercih eden Peumans’la sunucu Tom Lenaerts ve diğer yarışmacı olan Yönetmen Jan Eelen arasında şu diyalog yaşandı:

Lenaerts: “Türkler cevabını verdiniz ama doğrusu Yahudiler idi. Bunu gerçekten biliyor muydunuz?”

Peumans: “Gerçekten biliyordum ama Yahudiler hakkında yeni birşey söyleyecek cesaretim yok. Çok hassas insanlar. Bir zamanlar onların sözde
liberalizmi hakkında bir şeyler söyledim ama çok çektim. Bu nedenle..” Eelen: “Fakat Türkler hakkında söylemek meğer sorun değilmiş”

-BÜYÜKELÇİLİKTEN TEPKİ-

Skandal yarışmaya tepki gösteren Türkiye’nin Brüksel Bürükelçisi Murat Ersavcı, rahatsızlığını ilettiği Peumans’tan Türk toplumuna yönelik açıklama sözü
aldı.

Büyükelçilikten yapılan yazılı açıklamada, “Bir bilgi yarışması programına yakışmayan bu tür bir sorunun sorulmuş olması ve verilen yanıttan
duyduğumuz memnuniyetsizlik Büyükelçi Ersavcı tarafından Peumans;a telefonla iletilmiştir. Peumans, ön bilgisi dışında gelişen bu durumun amacını aşan
sonuçlara yol açmasından üzüntü duyduğunu; sitayişle bahsettiği ve hiçbir şekilde rencide etmek istemediğini vurguladığı Türk toplumuna bir açıklamada
bulunacağını; anılan televizyon kanalı nezdinde de gerekli girişimi yapacağını ifade etmiştir” denildi.

-SKANDALLARLA GÜNDEMDE-

Belçika’da cumhuriyetçi olduğu gerekçesiyle Kral’ın resepsiyonlarını boykot etmesiyle tanınan ve saldırgan uslubu nedeniyle Fransızca konuşan Valon
toplumunun tepkisini çeken Peumans, eşiyle gezintiye çıktığı Valon sınırındaki Vise kasabasında, “Yeni Flaman İttifakı üyesi bir politikacının Valon bölgesinde
ne işi olduğunu sorgulayan” bir gençten dayak yerken polis ekiplerince kurtarılmıştı.
